Nestled on the shores of Wisconsin’s largest lake in Polk County, Balsam Lake Lodge has a layered past reflecting the region’s evolution from rustic lakeside retreat to modern resort.
Indigenous Roots & Early Settlement
Before European settlement, the area was home to the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people, who named the region “Innenehinduc”—“place of the evergreen”—reflecting the abundant balsam fir and evergreens surrounding the lake .
By the late 19th century, Balsam Lake village was formally organized (1870) and developed with sawmills, creameries, general stores, and a blacksmith—buzzing with community life .
Paradise Landing Era
Originally, a humble lakeside property ceased operations by mid 20th century. By the 2000s, the site evolved into Paradise Landing, a beloved supper club and event center.
Local lore reveals that Paradise Landing boasted a stunning lakeside setting but endured variable fortunes, sometimes closing and changing hands .
Sunsets at Paradise / Balsam Lake Lodge Emergence
In 2020, new proprietors revitalized the property, rebranding it as Sunsets at Paradise, a supper club with lakeside charm.
Shortly thereafter, they elevated the experience even more—launching Balsam Lake Lodge and Restaurant in May 2021. This expansion brought ten modern lakeside suites, themed dining rooms (Barrel Room, Paradise Lounge), water rentals, and a scenic outdoor patio.
