Let’s be honest.
Minneapolis is great.
But sometimes you need to get out of it.
Not for a week. Not with a packed itinerary or a flight to catch. Just a weekend. Fresh air, a lake, a good meal, and enough quiet to actually feel human again by Monday morning.
That’s exactly what Balsam Lake Lodge is for.
And here’s the part that surprises most people: we’re only 75 minutes from the Twin Cities.
You’re Closer Than You Think
Drive east on I-94, cross into Wisconsin, and the world starts to change almost immediately. The traffic thins out. The billboards disappear. The landscape opens up into rolling hills, pine trees, and lake after lake.
By the time you pull into Balsam Lake, you feel like you’ve actually gone somewhere.
That’s the magic of the drive. It’s long enough to decompress, short enough that you’re not spending your whole weekend in the car.
75 minutes. Door to dock.
What’s Waiting for You When You Arrive
Balsam Lake Lodge sits right on the shore of Balsam Lake — Wisconsin’s largest lake in Polk County. The moment you check in, the pace changes.
Here’s what a typical weekend looks like:
Friday Evening
Check in, drop your bags, and head straight to the restaurant. Friday nights at the Lodge have their own energy — locals, live music, and a full bar with lake views. Start your weekend the right way.
Saturday Morning
Sleep in. You’re on lake time now. Then grab breakfast — our Breakfast & Bloody Mary Bar on weekends is exactly what it sounds like, and it is absolutely worth it.
Saturday Afternoon
Get on the water. We offer kayak, paddleboat, and pontoon rentals right on-site. You don’t need to bring a thing. No trailer, no planning — just show up and go.
Or don’t. The dock and the Adirondack chairs exist for a reason.
Saturday Evening
Dinner at the Lodge. A drink on the patio as the sun goes down over the lake. If there’s live music, even better.
Sunday Morning
One more breakfast. One more slow cup of coffee. Then the leisurely drive home — arriving back in the Cities feeling like you actually got away.
Why It Beats a Longer Trip
We love a big vacation as much as anyone. But the quick weekend getaway has its own underrated value.
No airports. No packing stress. No Monday morning recovery.
Just two nights that actually feel restorative.
Balsam Lake is close enough that you can leave Friday after work and still have a full evening ahead of you. It’s far enough that it genuinely feels like an escape.
That’s a hard balance to find. We’ve got it.
Perfect For…
Not sure if this trip is for you? It is, if:
-
You’ve been staring at a screen all week and need to look at something else
-
You and your partner keep saying “we should get away” and never do it
-
Your friend group needs a reason to actually spend time together
-
You want to celebrate something — a birthday, an anniversary, just surviving the week
-
You’ve never done a Wisconsin lake weekend and it’s time to fix that
A Note on Timing
Summer weekends book fast — especially July and August.
If you’re thinking about a trip, the best move is to lock in your lodge reservation sooner rather than later. Midweek stays are a great option too if your schedule is flexible. Fewer crowds, lower rates, and the lake is all yours.
We also have packages that bundle lodging with extras, so it’s worth checking those out when you book.
